New Year, new me yada, yada

2017 starting weight: 191.6
2016 starting weight: 193.6
I lost two whole pounds. Woo-hoo!

It's that time of year once again that I make some bold goals for the new year. And once again Operation Find My Abs will be on that list. 2016 started off strong for me, I hit the gym four to five times a week and I started eating healthy. But by late spring I derailed and the rest as they say is history.

First run of 2017
One thing I did stay consistent with is my running. As of New Year's morning, I've run at least one mile a day for 245 days. My 2016 total 658.5 miles. Not bad, but not as much as I ran in 2015 (but I did a half and full marathon that year). I enjoy running and will keep the streak alive for as long as I can, but I am also recommitting to getting to the gym and eating healthier. I'm also a part of a Snapchat accountability group headed by "Coach" Chad Williams. My abs are there, I just hope to find them.

Blogger at work!
Fitness is always a top priority, but so is expanding my brand. My 1-2-3 Cents grew over 2016 in terms of the freelance blogging. My goal for 2017 is to take things to the next level. The plan is to grow the blog, podcast and YouTube channel. By the end of the year, this site should have more than one million hits. My blogging streak here just reached day 220.

Thank you to everyone who has supported all my endeavors. New projects are coming in 2017 including more with the Craftbeericans. Stay tuned, it's going to be a great year.

Trying not to gobble extra calories

Thanksgiving dinner a few years ago

October has come and gone and I survived the Halloween season for the most part. I did break into a hidden stash of candy prior to Halloween night, but shared it with the rest of the family, limiting myself to less than I normally binge on. I have only had a couple of fun size pieces from the collection my daughter picked up Monday night.

Now that the candy is behind me (for the most part) I'm refocusing on a few fitness and nutrition goals for the rest of the year. I have recently switched from whey protein powder to a plant-based one. I'm enjoying Vega's protein and greens chocolate flavor powder. I mix it with spinach, banana, blueberries and skim milk.

Protein & greens
Honestly, I don't know what to look for in a protein powder. Compared to my previous go-to, Body Fortress, Vega has fewer calories, fat and sugar. But it also has less protein and more sodium. I've read that plant-based protein is better and Vega has 20 g of it along with two servings of greens including alfalfa, spinach, broccoli and kale.

The other factor this month is Thanksgiving. Luckily it's only a day or two (with leftovers). I'll be looking for healthier options to add to the table this year, but at the same time not completely giving up on my favorites (White Castle stuffing is amazing).

Daily running is still a thing, but so is weekly craft beer. My sleep has not improved and I haven't seen the inside of a gym in months. I'm not waiting for the new year to restart the working out. Here's to getting a jump on 2017.

Tricking my sweet tooth to avoid Halloween treats

It's October 1 and time for another accountability blog. I started earlier this year with a renewed focus on Operation Find My Abs. If you've kept up, you know I've hit several bumps in the road. September turned out to not be a bad month. On January 1, I weighed 193.6 pounds and today I'm 184.3 pounds. The goal isn't weight loss, but to tone up and be in better shape.

Throughout the month I focused on running for my main source of exercise. The run streak I started on May 1 continued through the month. But I did do several one milers because of a pulled muscle in my back. I put in about 63 miles for the month.

Oktoberfest
My goal for October is to not only run more, but also workout more. I haven't been to the gym in months. That has to change. The last three months of the year I typically fall off the healthier eating wagon and indulge in the sweet treats associated with the seasons at hand. Candy apples, Reese's Pumpkins and pumpkin spiced beer will tempt me for the next four weeks. Moderation will be the key as I likely will not have the willpower to completely eliminate these things.

Does anyone have tips on keeping a sweet tooth at bay? I have been turning to chocolate protein powder smoothies when I want something sweet and it's helping. My snacking continues to be almonds, cashews and fresh fruit. What else can I add?

Streaking into June

Selfie break with the Big Muddy Monster

I promise there will be no nudity in this post.  That's not the streaking I'm talking about.  I've had plenty of ups and downs with Operation Find My Abs through the years.  In fact, I'm still looking.  I'm hoping 2016 is the year I finally get into better shape (and round doesn't count).

May started off with the launch of a running streak for me.  I have run at least one mile every day since then.  I racked up just over 75 miles for the month.  The Yellow Donkey running group I'm a member of is the source of inspiration for this streak.  I blogged before about losing my passion for running after I completed my first marathon in October.  I'm not ready for another long distance race, but I am gradually regaining my love for the sport.

Another streak I started is the #22KILL push-up challenge.  I wrote about it the other day, so I won't repeat myself.  But I will say this is an important streak because it's raising awareness about veteran suicide.  Plus it's another way to get in some extra exercise.

I've also started a planking challenge.  It's a 30 day thing, but there are rest days involved. This is another one courtesy of those crazy running donkeys.  I know I'm not going to sculpt abs of steel with this, but the challenge will help in the process. One other streak I've started is a blogging streak.  You're reading this, so it must be working.  Actually I have seen some growth on the page as a result of the consistent content.

Other things I did in May, I was hit or miss with the gym over the course of the month.  My eating habits were pretty good, but I still have an out of control sweet tooth some days. I haven't had a soda (I'm addicted to Vanilla Coke Zero) since the end of April.  I'm not going to lie, I will resume the soda drinking but just one day a week.

My hope for June is that these healthy streaks start having a visual impact on the task at hand, which remains finding at least a trace of my abs.

January 1: 190 Pounds
March 1: 173 Pounds

It’s only been two months since I started the #OperationFindMyAbs in earnest, but I can already see the results. This was made clear last week when Facebook reminded me how out of shape I was by bringing up a past memory. Earlier in the week I had joked with a friend after watching an episode of My 600 Pound Life that if my face ever looked like a live version of the happy face emoticon to let me know. I guess Facebook took my suggestion seriously because I couldn’t believe how much 2014 me could have been used in a text message to express happiness.

Happy face emoticon
When I decided to get serious about trying to get in shape, I told Kevin my short-term goal was to get down to 170 pounds by the time Wrestlemania week rolled around. While I should be able to hit that goal by the time we roll into Dallas on April 1, I’ve still got a ways to go to reach my ultimate goal. I still can’t see any abs and I need to work on building muscle now that I’ve gotten rid of most of the fat. This next month is going to be a real test of my willpower.

As Kevin mentioned in his accountability blog for this month, there were some moments of weakness and setbacks in the last month. I had to go home for a funeral then went straight from there to San Jose for a weekend of hockey. I actually put on two pounds during that week due to lack of exercise and poor eating.

At the end of March, in addition to spending a week in Texas for WrestleMania, the week before I’ll be going around upstate New York, Montreal and Ottawa in the ongoing quest to see all 30 NHL teams play at home. Two weeks on the road avoiding fast food and making sure to get in a daily workout won’t be easy. Even if I should suffer a setback, my determination will not be broken. The journey of 1000 miles starts with one step.

March is coming in like a ... PIG

Oink!

Forget the lion and the lamb.  For this guy, March is moving in more like a pig.  February was a rough month keeping on course with my fitness and nutrition goals.  I can sit here and list excuses as to why I didn't hit the gym as often as I was supposed to or why I ate and drank in excess several times, but that's a waste of all our time.

Ab workout
Excuses don't mean anything.  The time has come and gone and I'm refocusing on the task at hand.  By this point in my program, which started January 3, I was hoping to see better results.  Looking in the mirror, I don't notice any significant changes.

I take responsibility for this set back.  I'm going to take the lessons learned over the last 29 days and make different choices.  March too will be a rough month.  I'm already mentally planning what I'm going to eat and when I'm going to workout when we hit Disney World.

Beer:30
On a positive note, I've kept my intake of sweet treats pretty low. February's gluttony included alcohol, a lot of Mexican food and more diet soda than I normally drink. I slacked in the last week of the month with workouts too.  But as we flip the page on a new month, I'm reminding myself this is a fresh start.

Zack Ryder
Warmer temperatures in the spring months and training for an upcoming relay race should add some miles to my running app and I've found a new workout program courtesy of WWE Superstar Zack Ryder.  Hopefully by the end of March the pig is gone and I'm roaring like a lion.

Motivational Monday: When you feel like quitting...

Disclaimer: I am not an expert, but the advice dispensed here has been researched or is something that has worked for me in the past.  Proceed at your own risk...

I came across that quote this morning as I was scrolling through Facebook.  It’s by no accident I’m sure.  The original post came from the Southern Illinois Men’s Expo page and was put there by Harness Digital Marketing.  I think most of us can relate to the words, whether it’s with a fitness plan, career choices or relationship goals.

If you’re reading this on Monday, then you know it’s the day after the Super Bowl.  Like many people in this country, I overindulged at a party Sunday evening.  I stayed up later than usual for me (I get up at 1:30 a.m. daily) and as soon as my alarm went off I instantly told myself “you get to take a nap today.  Skip the gym and come home and sleep.”

One of many plates.

But then as I got some caffeine flowing and came across the Motivational Monday quote of the week, I knew going home and napping wasn’t an option.  I really needed to get to the gym for a couple of reasons.  I had lost five pounds last week and I celebrated that fact by having an epic cheat day at the Super Bowl party I attended.  While I know I can’t undo the cheese and bacon filled mini potatoes, guac and chips and buffalo chip dip I indulged in, I knew that I would feel better working out.  Also daily frustrations had already built up and Gold's Gym is a more effective stress reliever than eating a bowl of Cocoa Pebbles like I used to do.

I’ve started and stopped working out more times than I can remember since graduating high school nearly 25 years ago.  I often think where I’d be had I stayed the course.  Now at nearly age 43, I’m determined more than ever to reach my fitness goals.  I hope when you feel like quitting you’ll think about why you started.  I know I will.  Good luck on your quest.

You can't outwork a fork

Working the ropes
By Kevin Hunsperger

Listen to the podcast

On New Year's Day I posted a blog about how running had made me fat.  I decided then that after years of talk, 2016 would be the year I find my abs.  My friend Tyler Hatton reached out to me and offered to work with me at Gold's Gym.  This is my one month progress report.  (By the way, you can listen to my podcast with Tyler about fitness and nutrition here.)

When I weighed in on January 1, I was 193.6 pounds.  I'm pretty sure that's the heaviest I've ever been.  Today (February 2), I'm down exactly 10 pounds, weighing 183.6 pounds.  My goal remains getting more toned and defined.  I'm seeing some progress in that department, but as we all know these changes take time.

Back and biceps day

I am proud that I've been consistent with my working out. I hit a different group of muscles each time I'm at Gold's, which is at least four days a week.  I'm also running (not as much as I used to), but more importantly I'm eating so much better than before.  I've said goodbye to flavored coffee creamer, fast food and I very rarely eat sweets.

Spaghetti squash burrito boat

This past Sunday I splurged and had a cappuccino, a glazed Krispy Kreme doughnut and a few hands full of chocolate caramel popcorn.  But I limited my poor choices to that one day and I'm back on course.  I recently made a spaghetti squash burrito boat to replace the usual wheat or flour tortilla.  It was incredibly delicious.

Ab workout
Chad and I are both competing against each other in this Operation Find My Abs challenge.  It's not about being vain and posting a bunch of pics, although I did here.  My goal (and his) is to motivate each other and help readers and listeners along the way.  His main focus is DDP Yoga,  a program I still do from time to time.  I'm staying mostly in the gym for my quest.

If you're thinking about getting started, it's not too late.  Don't wait until "Monday."  Finish reading this and then start.  Play episode 60 of the podcast and get some fitness and nutrition tips from someone who knows what he's talking about.  Good luck!

Motivational Monday: Taking on February

By Chad Smart

About three years ago, I ordered the DDP Yoga workouts and was determined to beat Kevin in the “Operation Find My Abs” faux challenge. Once I got the DVDs, I wrote a blog to publicly announce my intentions to get in shape in hopes that if I put it out there I would have to go through with the plan. Even with getting a call of encouragement from “Diamond” Dallas Page, the initial euphoria of working out only lasted a few months before I fell back into old habits and let the DVDs collect dust.

Last December when the DDPYoga Now app was released, I figured if I bought a year subscription then I’d have to use it. Otherwise, I’d just be wasting money. This time however something was different. Previously, I was doing the workouts but that was about it. This time, I knew I had to make changes to my lifestyle. The big question was would I be able to make those changes and stick with them.

The first step was getting into the habit of doing the workouts. I had started looking at the new workouts on the app. These would be the first pieces to change my mindset. Previously, one of the excuses I used was “the workouts are too repetitive” because I was watching the same DVDs every day. Now there were new workouts to try out. However, I will admit that after a month of working out daily, I’m starting to slip into the old mindset. I need to refocus.

Second step involved eating. I have been living in fast food joints for the better part of twenty years. Now was time to learn how to use the big white box in my kitchen that produces fire. I waited until after I finished my last job on January 8 before starting this step. Since January 9, with the exception of this past weekend when I wasn’t home, all my meals have been home cooked. So far, I have successfully changed my mindset. I don’t look at fast food as food I can’t eat. Instead, I view it as food I DON’T want. If you’d told me at the beginning of the year, I could go three weeks without Taco Bell and not be craving it; I would have thought you were crazy. Now though, I’m looking forward to improving my culinary skills and seeing what new things I can try in the kitchen.

Something that has helped me over the past month was being unemployed. It’s not a thing that I’d recommend. In fact, if anyone reading this knows of anyone hiring, I could use a job. Anyway, being unemployed gave me more time to integrate more cardio into my daily activity. In the past, when I would be unemployed I’d usually go see a movie either daily or at least three times a week. In addition to sitting in a theater for 2-3 hours, I would always get a pizza and either a water or large Cherry Coke. Not exactly the best decisions if you’re trying to get in shape.

The past three weeks though, instead of sitting in a theater, I spend the 2-3 hours walking. I try to average at least seven miles a day and on really good days, walk 10-12 miles. Again, it comes down to mindset. I would rather be doing something active to pass the time than simply letting the day pass me by while I sit.

My goal when I started, or re-started, was not just finally finding my abs before Kevin finds his. I knew I wanted to lose 20-25 pounds and get into better shape. After the first month, I am well on that path. I’ve lost 10 pounds and feel much better. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to take my 30-day progression photos before writing this blog. You’ll just have to take my word that there’s been a noticeable change. I will get photos before the next installment of the Accountability Blog.

If you’re reading this and either are on a path to better yourself, or thinking about it, Kevin and I are here to help cheer you on your way. I know Kevin has been hitting the gym more. I stand by the DDP Yoga app. Whatever you choose, try to stay positive and keep pressing on. Success isn’t judged by one day and neither is failure.

Motivational Monday: Pay yourself to succeed

One of my favorites from the Rock

Listen to the podcast

Disclaimer: I am not an expert, but the advice dispensed here has been researched or is something that has worked for me in the past.  Proceed at your own risk...

I'm starting something new here on the blog.  It's called Motivational Monday.   Most of us probably made a New Year's resolution last week.  We're four days into 2016 and you may have already fallen off the wagon.  If you have, don't fret.  Here's an idea from the team at Cleveland Clinic:  Pay yourself to succeed.

Here's how it works.  Set your goal.  For example if you want to work out more, come up with a schedule to go to the gym or to just work out.  When you work toward that goal, put some money into a jar with the intent on spending it on an expensive item you wouldn't normally buy yourself.  Maybe you have your eye on a new iPhone or a GoPro or a vacation.

Here's the important part, don't spend the money until you've reached the cost of the "prize."  Determine how much you can afford to throw into the jar according to your budget.  The idea is for this to take more than a few weeks to achieve.  If you miss a day of working out, it's no big deal.  Get back on track and continue to drop that money in the jar.

You can come up with a similar plan if your intention is to quit smoking.  When you make it through a day without lighting up, put in the amount equivalent to what you spend on cigarettes each day.  Or if you want to stop eating fast food, put the cash in when you don't go through a drive thru.  Your money is still being spent, but you're rewarding yourself and changing a habit at the same time.

Day 2 of working out
Gold's Gym, Marion
Experts say it takes about 63 days to change a behavior, so don't expect rock hard abs on January 30 or to have lost 30 pounds by the end of the month.  Remember, you can do it. Share your tips here.  Good luck and Happy New Year.

A golden opportunity

Good as gold

By Kevin Hunsperger

Listen to the podcast

On January 1, I posted a blog about how running had made me fat.  That post caught the eye of a friend of mine, Tyler.  I met him years ago when I was doing commentary for All American Pro Wrestling and he was one of the company's top wrestlers.  We've stayed in touch through the years and recently he reached out to me with an offer.

Tyler in action
Tyler works at Gold's Gym and has helped transform the lives of many people over the years. Now I'm on that list of makeovers.  It's only day one, but I'm ready.  We met this morning for a workout and a talk about nutrition.  Some of the things he told me I knew, but he also gave me some good information.

"Abs start in the kitchen."  I'm eating every three or four hours now and cutting out sugar as much as possible.  I've already started stocking up on healthier snacks like almonds and nuts.  Raw vegetables and fresh fruit won't have time to expire anymore.  I'm determined more now than ever to make 2016 the year of the abs.  Tyler says we'll find them by June.  I'll keep you posted.

How running made me fat

Finishing the Shawnee Marathon
By Kevin Hunsperger
@kevinhunsperger & @my123cents on Twitter
Listen to the podcast

Let me clarify.  The headline was admittedly to get you here.  I don't really blame running on my recent weight gain. But my mindset after I run.  In 2015 I ran more than ever before, logging 793 miles.  I ran a half marathon, a full marathon, a relay race and several 5Ks.   So it was a good year for running.

Wrapping up 2015
While my mileage went up, so did my weight.  It's nothing drastic, but I am about 10 pounds heavier than I was a year ago.  I weighed myself this morning (New Year's Day) and I'm at 193.6 pounds.  I'm not complaining, but I'm not happy with the way things are right now.

When I run and see that I've burned hundreds of calories, I justify making a less healthy choice later that day.  Over the fall I became addicted to peanut butter and apple butter sandwiches at lunch.  I've also started using flavored coffee creamers, and after two or three cups a day, the calories add up. I'm now limiting myself to one coffee a day with the creamer, the rest of my cups are just black.

January 1, 2016
I'm not pregnant
For the last couple of years I've declared it the year I find my abs.  Obviously, that's still not happened.  I took that pic above this morning after weighing myself.  I've also started the 30 Day Ab Challenge.  I know that abs are built in the kitchen, and I'm changing my eating habits and trying to conquer my sweet tooth.  It's not going to be easy, but I know it can be done.

In addition to the Ab Challenge, I plan to increase the number of times I hit the gym.  I'll also work more DDP Yoga into my life and of course, I'll keep running.  My first meal of the new year was a spinach, banana, blueberry and peanut butter smoothie.  It's pretty good and good for me too (at least I hope).
