Diesel Running on E

Courtesy: WWE
Over the weekend I read a spoiler that Kevin Nash was going to be in the Royal Rumble.  I hate reading spoilers like this, because of the Internet there are so few surprises in the world of wrestling anymore and I wanted to be surprised.  I wasn't.  I also read about Booker T being in the match prior to Sunday night.

What did surprise me that evening though was the fact that Nash was sporting his "Diesel" gear, complete with the black glove and the dyed black hair.

I have not read any spoilers for SmackDown! so I don't know if there's any more to Nash's appearance Sunday night than just the one time Rumble.  I did read he's signed a Legends contract with the WWE.

Personally, I hope Nash or Diesel doesn't stick around for an on camera wrestling role.  I have never really bought into the Diesel character, dating back to 1993 or so when he first showed up at Shawn Michaels' bodyguard.  I was especially disappointed when they put the world title on him in 1994 after Bret Hart jobbed to Bob Backlund.

The Diesel era as WWF champion was pretty lackluster.  I know Vince McMahon was doing a lot of reshuffling and replanning after Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage had left his company for more money in WCW.  Other stars who had been around for years were leaving too.  Big Bossman and Hacksaw Jim Duggan come to mind immediately.  So Vince needed someone to lead the way.  Why not go with the 7 foot tall powerhouse?  It made sense, right?  That always seemed to be Vince's thought anyway.

Remember, these are just my opinions and if you disagree I really do want to hear from you.  As a fan who didn't read too much into things back then I thought Bret was doing a fine job as the champion.  They could have bumped up his program with Shawn Michaels or even had him do another series with Mr. Perfect or even the Undertaker.  I just never got the whole "Diesel" thing.

My opinion of Diesel worsened when he left the WWF and headed south to Atlanta and joined WCW.  I wasn't made that he left the company.  Everyone has a right to pursue their career and make more money.  I just didn't like the Kevin Nash "character".  The guy on TV I thought was a total douche.  Maybe that's his character, maybe that's him, I don't know.  But I didn't like it.  Never have and likely never will.

Then he came back the to WWE and if I remember correctly tore a quad walking across the ring.  He required some time off and came back to face Triple H for the title.  I think I have that in the right order.  I'm just glad he didn't get another run as champ.

Fast forward to present day and Nash's recent comments about Wade Barrett on YouTube.  If you haven't seen it, look it up.  Nash goes off on Barrett in a drunken, profanity laced tirade.  Totally lacking class, but what do you expect from the "outsider".

Then a short time later, he's waltzing into the ring for the Royal Rumble.  I'm glad that Barrett was the one to eliminate him.  I'm not sure if that was worked that way because of the shoot video or not, but it brought a smile to my face.

I don't know if Nash is here to stay.  I hope not.  But I'm sure I'm going to have to sit through him inducting Shawn Michaels into the Hall of Fame at this year's ceremony.  Maybe I'll bring my earphones and listen to my iPod while that's happening.

Seriously though, share your 1-2-3 cents with me.  I love hearing from other fans.  You can also watch My 1-2-3 Cents on YouTube.  Thanks for reading.

  1. I guess Nash was looking for that one big fat last paycheck after leaving TNA.

Interesting blog you got here, found it through the blogs of note link.

This will give me a (hopefully) good third point of view, after PWTorch and Eric Bishchoff (well, Eric really isn't that good as he wimped out and got rid of about 85% of his FB page).

  4. Sorry, I disagree. Nash never had great wrestling skills but his size, power and his skills on the mic were superb...
