Who will win the Ultimate Royal Rumble?

@kevinhunsperger & @my123cents on Twitter
Since 1988 25 men have won the Royal Rumble. There have been a handful of two time winners, including Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Batista, John Cena and Randy Orton. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin has won the event three times and Braun Strowman is the winner of the first Greatest Royal Rumble. I did include him in this post.

But of the 25 winners who would win the Ultimate Royal Rumble?

Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Chris Benoit, Steve Austin, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio and Vince McMahon (yes, I know) all proved they can go the distance, choosing single digital numbers and winning. Yokozuna had the massive size. Braun Strowman, Hulk Hogan, Roman Reigns, Batista, Sheamus, Undertaker, Brock Lesnar Lex Luger and John Cena are among the most powerful.

I loved Flair's performance in the 1992 Royal Rumble. He's on my shortlist of men to win this time around too. The raw power and dominance that Strowman has shown for the past year or so has made him unstoppable. But I'm picking the guy who has won the most Rumbles, even though he kinda cheated in 1997, and that's Austin.

Who is your choice?

  • 1988: Hacksaw Jim Duggan (entrant No.13)
  • 1989: Big John Studd (No. 27)
  • 1990: Hulk Hogan (No. 25)
  • 1991: Hulk Hogan (No. 24)
  • 1992: Ric Flair (No. 3)
  • 1993: Yokozuna (No. 27)
  • 1994: Bret Hart (No. 27) and Lex Luger (No. 23), co-winners
  • 1995: Shawn Michaels (No. 1)
  • 1996: Shawn Michaels (No. 18)
  • 1997: Steve Austin (No. 5)
  • 1998: Steve Austin (No. 24)
  • 1999: Vince McMahon (No. 2)
  • 2000: The Rock (No. 24)
  • 2001: Steve Austin (No. 27)
  • 2002: Triple H (No. 22)
  • 2003: Brock Lesnar (No. 29)
  • 2004: Chris Benoit (No. 1)
  • 2005: Batista (No. 28)
  • 2006: Rey Mysterio (No. 2)
  • 2007: The Undertaker (No. 30)
  • 2008: John Cena (No. 30)
  • 2009: Randy Orton (No. 8)
  • 2010: Edge (No. 29)
  • 2011: Alberto Del Rio (No. 38)
  • 2012: Sheamus (No. 22)
  • 2013: John Cena (No. 19)
  • 2014: Batista (No. 28)
  • 2015: Roman Reigns (No. 19)
  • 2016: Triple H (No. 30)
  • 2017: Randy Orton (No. 23)
  • 2018: Shinsuke Nakamura (No. 14)
  • 2018: Braun Strowman (No. 41 in Greatest Royal Rumble)

VIDEO: Roman Reigns is NOT faking cancer

By Kevin Hunsperger

Some have speculated Roman Reigns' announcement about battling leukemia is a work, something to make him a more sympathetic babyface. I share my thoughts on that notion and why it's that's not the case in today's YouTube video.

The Shield vs. Stride Pro Wrestling

@kevinhunsperger & @my123cents on Twitter

Please note: The Shield is NOT appearing at any Stride Pro Wrestling event. This is merely a FANTASY BOOKING BLOG. Thanks.

Once again, WWE fans find themselves cheering for the threesome of Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins. The group is known as The Shield and first burst onto the WWE roster in late 2012. Of course, they've had their ups and downs and have been reunited more times than Big Show has turned heel. (I could be wrong on that.)

The most recent reunion occurred this past Monday, a day after Reigns regained the Universal Championship, Rollins recaptured the Intercontential Championship and a week after Ambrose returned from an extended injury.

So I decided to have some fun and put together a threesome on the Stride Pro Wrestling roster to go head to head with the Hounds of Justice. If your favorite Stride trio isn't here, don't worry, I'm working on a more elaborate fantasy blog for Chikara's upcoming King of Trios.

Heath Hatton, Ax Allwardt and Daniel Eads. Hatton and Allwardt are two-time tag team champions. Eads has impressed me since meeting him a few years ago. Together these three could pose a huge threat to the Shield.

Tony Flood, Chris Hargas and Roger Matheus. These three have had their differences with each other in the past. However, I think in a crisis situation they could put those differences aside and work together. Flood, of course, is the current heavyweight champion in Stride.

The Midwest Monster and Wraith: Bo Sawyer and Jason Tiller are the tag team champions and Wraith holds the Legacy Title. Not sure how Monster Hunters and a ghost would coexist, but you never know.

Again these are just a few teams. I'll have the King of Trios blog up next week. Who would you put in the ring against the Shield?

SummerSlam 2018 predictions

@kevinhunsperger & @my123cents on Twitter

I have not shown WWE much love on this blog in quite some time. It's not because I'm not digging the current product, but life is moving way too fast right now and I simply do not have the time to invest in three hours of Raw, two hours of SmackDown Live and an hour of NXT each week. I have kept up with storylines and try to watch most or all of the pay per views still.

That being said, I wanted to spend today's blog on SummerSlam. It's hard to believe this event started 30 years ago. I was a sophomore in high school and remember talking to a friend of mine in the locker room about the results. He had seen it, I had not. I was disappointed that my favorite at that time the Honky Tonk Man (yes, it's true) had gone down in defeat to the Ultimate Warrior, losing the Intercontinental Championship in 31 seconds.

Fast forward to 2018 and SummerSlam is still thrilling the WWE Universe. This year's event promises to be a compelling one and as I write this, it will be the first SummerSlam without one of these four men wrestling on the card: Bret Hart, Undertaker, Triple H and John Cena. I'm not sure what that means for wrestling, but it tells me it's time to keep moving forward and creating new Superstars. So here are my quick picks for this year's SummerSlam, keeping in mind my viewing habits.

Andrade "Cien" Almas & Zelina Vega will beat Rusev and Lana.

The B-Team will retain the Raw Tag Team Titles against The Revival.

Drew Gulak will win the Cruiserweight Championship.

Nakamura retains against Jeff Hardy (maybe Randy Orton gets involved in this too).

Charlotte Flair turns on Becky Lynch to win the SmackDown
Women's Championship.

I'd like to see Daniel Bryan and The Miz end in a no-contest to keep this feud brewing.

Seth Rollins will beat Dolph Ziggler to reclaim the IC Title. Ambrose will eventually turn on Seth, but not at SummerSlam.

Kevin Owens will end up with the Money in the Bank briefcase.

The Bludgeon Brothers will walk out with the SmackDown Tag Team Titles.

Finn Balor has got to beat Baron Corbin.

Ronda Rousey will beat Alexa Bliss by disqualification.

AJ Styles will retain the WWE Championship against Samoa Joe.

Roman Reigns will beat Brock Lesnar and moments later Owens will cash in his briefcase and walk out WWE Universal Champion.

I have zero percent confidence in any of these picks. I'd personally rather see Bobby Lashley win the Universal Championship but as you see he's not even on one of the biggest events of the year.

Greatest Royal Rumble?

By Kevin Hunsperger
@kevinhunsperger & @my123cents on Twitter

In just a few hours, WWE presents the Greatest Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabi. I'm not going to get into the anti-women sentiment that's coming out of that country. I think we're all on the same page with that. Instead, I'm going to talk about the actual match.

My work schedule would usually allow me to watch the event live on the WWE Network at 11 a.m., but I am working different hours Friday, so I'll be keeping up via Twitter and will watch the show later this weekend. Unlike some critics, I do not hate the idea of this match. I've always loved the Royal Rumble match. And adding 20 more Superstars shouldn't drag down the match. With the high profile Superstars being a part of it, in my 1-2-3 cents there will be plenty of opportunities to tell great stories throughout the course of the match.

Here are some quick predictions for the show:

Braun Strowman wins the Greatest Royal Rumble.

I'd love to see Brock Lesnar retain the Universal Championship against Roman Reigns and start a feud with Bobby Lashley and eventually drop it to him. However, I won't be surprised if Reigns wins in Saudi and comes back here as champion.

I want to believe Undertaker is going to pass the torch to Rusev and the Bulgarian Brute will win their casket match.

Jeff Hardy retains against Jinder Mahal.

Bray Wyatt and "Woken" Matt Hardy will win the Raw Tag Team Championships.

John Cena and Triple H will end in a double DQ or double count out.

Now that Nakamura is a bad guy, I can get on board with him beating AJ Styles and we spend the summer with AJ in pursuit of the championship again.

Seth Rollins will retain the IC Title in the ladder match against Samoa Joe, The Miz and Finn Balor.

Cedric Alexander keeps the Cruiserweight Championship against Kalisto.

The Bludgeon Brothers will keep the tag team titles against the Usos.

What are your thoughts? Weigh in here or on the My 1-2-3 Cents Facebook page.

Royal Rumble dream

Spoiler alert: This is about Daniel Bryan

As wrestling fans, we always think we know what's best when it comes to storylines and matches. However, I trust (mostly) in the men and women behind the scenes. There is sometimes a method to the madness. But there are also times when logic gets thrown out the window. I hope with the 2018 Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 34 that is not the case.

Nakamura vs. Cena
Courtesy: WWE
I've been asked several times who I think is going to win this year's Royal Rumble. Rumors persist that it's going to be Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns at WrestleMania. So Roman is definitely in the conversation for winning. Others have argued, including my buddy Chad, that since Elimination Chamber is a Raw pay per view, that a SmackDown Live Superstar will win the Rumble and Nakamura vs. AJ Styles seems to be what a lot of fans fancy now.

I'd be all for that. Admittedly I haven't watched a lot of wrestling in recent weeks due to other obligations but I have kept up with things via social media and the interwebs. I still don't feel like WWE has done enough to make me care about Nakamura. So putting him in one of the main events of the biggest show of the year may be premature. However, there's still time to make this happen.

Just a few minutes ago Chad threw an idea out to me via text. I don't know how serious he is about it or if he even wants me sharing, but it is certainly thought-provoking. What if Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn beat AJ at the Rumble and win the WWE Championship. Then Daniel Bryan enters the Rumble match and wins it. I told him the internet would explode.

Yes!

Of all current possibilities, I like this one the most. But as far as we know Bryan still hasn't been cleared to wrestle by WWE physicians. That being said, this would be the ultimate surprise entrant into the match. I'm still holding out hope that IF he's medically cleared by doctors that he will one day wrestle again. His style would have to change, but I'd love for him to have an opportunity to return to the top of the mountain like he was in 2014 at WrestleMania XXX. But his health has to come first, over my fandom and that of millions of others.

Now on Sunday, I'll be watching the Royal Rumble and patiently waiting for Bryan's music to hit and for him to run to the ring with thousands of "YES!" chants filling the arena. Chad will be there by the way and the current plan is to do a podcast after the event ends. So Monday's My 1-2-3 Cents podcast will drop a little later than usual.

Royal Rumble winners

It's hard to believe the Royal Rumble has been around 30 years. So ahead of next week's show, I came up with some fun facts, mostly about the winners, but I had to stretch on some of them. Most of these I knew, but full disclosure, I had to look some info up.

1988 - Jim Duggan: First Royal Rumble winner

1989 - "Big" John Studd - Went on to WrestleMania 5 to be a special guest referee and not wrestle.

1990 - Hulk Hogan: First time a WWF Champion won the Rumble.

1991 - Hulk Hogan: First Superstar to win back to back Royal Rumbles

1992 - Ric Flair: The first heel to win the Royal Rumble and for the first time the WWE Championship was awarded to the winner.

1993 - Yokozuna: First Superstar to win the match under the stipulation that the winner gets a championship match at WrestleMania.

1994 - Bret Hart & Lex Luger: First (and only) co-winners of the Royal Rumble.

1995 - Shawn Michaels: First Superstar to draw number one and win the Rumble.

1996 - Shawn Michaels: Won the match a second time and had the same number of eliminations both years (8).

1997 - "Stone Cold" Steve Austin: First time a Superstar was eliminated from the match and came back to win the Rumble.

1998 - "Stone Cold" Steve Austin: Went toe to toe the night after winning the Rumble with Mike Tyson on Monday Night Raw.

1999 - Vince McMahon - First non-Superstar to win the Rumble.

2000 - The Rock: First time a Royal Rumble winner went on to WrestleMania to face three other competitors for the Championship.

2001 - "Stone Cold" Steve Austin: First three-time winner of the Rumble.

2002 - Triple H: First time the winner challenged for the "Undisputed WWE Championship".

2003 - Brock Lesnar: First winner of the Royal Rumble under a brand split.

2004 - Chris Benoit: Won the Rumble as a SmackDown! Superstart but switched brands to challenge the Raw Champion (Triple H).

2005 - Batista: Won the Rumble and for the first time, the second runner-up challenged the opposing show's champion (John Cena challenged JBL).

2006 - Rey Mysterio: First Superstar under 200 pounds to win the Rumble.

2007 - Undertaker: First Superstar to draw number 30 and win the Rumble.

2008 - John Cena: First time a Superstar no one could see won the Royal Rumble.

2009 - Randy Orton: First time the final two men in the Rumble went on to face each other WrestleMania. Triple H won the WWE Championship the next month at No Way Out in the Elimination Chamber.

2010 - Edge: Up to that time the Superstar who spent the least amount of time in the match to win the Rumble (7:19).

2011 - Alberto Del Rio: First Superstar to outlast 39 other Superstars.

2012 - Sheamus: Yes, Sheamus won. But this marked the first time all three members of the commentary team also competed in the Royal Rumble (Jerry Lawler, Michael Cole and Booker T).

2013 - John Cena: First year an NXT Superstar competed in the Rumble (Bo Dallas).

2014 - Batista: Eliminated Roman Reigns moments after the "Big Dog" set a new record for most eliminations in a single Rumble match (12).

2015 - Roman Reigns: First time a Royal Rumble winner was pinned in the Championship match by a Money in the Bank winner cashing in (Seth Rollins).

2016 - Triple H: First time the WWE Championship was defended in the match. Reigns came in as champ and lost the title that night, only to go on and regain it from Triple H at WrestleMania 32.

2017 - Randy Orton: Announced he was giving up his Championship match after Bray Wyatt won the gold at No Way Out, but it turned out to be a swerve by Orton.

TLC: Totally (Il)logical Changes

By
Chad Smart
@chadsmart & @my123cents on Twitter

It’s been quite some time since I last submitted a blog here on the mighty My 1-2-3 Cents website. I think the last time I wrote something fans still liked Roman Reigns. Let's see if I can remember how to be snarky and cynical. Speaking of cynical, be sure to listen to my podcast Positive Cynicism. Available on the Jittery Monkey Podcasting Network and on iTunes. Back to the blog.

On  Friday (10/20/2017) WWE announced that due to health reasons Bray Wyatt and Roman Reigns were pulled from the TLC network special. WWE also announced AJ Styles would replace Bray in a match against “The Demon” Finn Balor while Kurt Angle would wrestle his first match in WWE in over ten years filling in for Roman Reigns in the Shield vs. The StrauKane Bar-Mizvah 5-3 TLC match. On paper these changes garner excitement. In reality, they show WWE’s lack of coherent storytelling and lazy booking of creating specific highlight clips rather than organic moments.

I guess I should explain why I’m being critical of these changes. WWE is not an independent promotion doing a spot show every month focusing more on putting on good matches than ongoing storylines. WWE has weekly episodic television. Whatever happens Sunday should play off of what has happened over the previous weeks and lead into what’s going to happen the next night on Monday Night Raw. So yes, putting AJ Styles and Kurt Angle into matches makes sense if Sunday’s show was a house show and WWE wanted to give fans suitable replacements to get their money’s worth. As a televised event, the changes make little to no sense.

Die-hard wrestling fans know AJ Styles and Prince Devitt (Finn Balor’s pre-WWE name) were members of the super popular (and IMO, super douchey) New Japan faction The Bullet Club. Seeing two former Club members wrestle each other has been a dream match since AJ Styles debuted in WWE at Royal Rumble 2016. For non-New Japan fans or fans who don’t know the history of AJ and Finn, what interest is there in seeing the two wrestle? I’m not taking anything from the talent of the two wrestlers as this match could have the potential to be the match of the night. Looking at the matchup from a logical (and longtime readers know Kevin and I often complain about the lack of logic in wrestling) standpoint, I fail to see a storyline reason for this match.

TLC is a RAW brand show. AJ Styles is a Smackdown superstar. So far in the 18-month redo of the brand split, WWE has done a pretty decent job of keeping the brands separate on non-co-branded shows. Why has Smackdown General Manager Daniel Bryan allowed to let AJ Styles wrestle for RAW? What storyline reason does AJ have to wrestle Finn? WWE is still promoting Finn’s alter ego, “The Demon” for this match. Why would “The Demon” come out to wrestle AJ? What will happen after Sunday when AJ goes back to Smackdown? What is the longterm, or since the next show is the co-branded Survivor Series, what is the short-term booking fallout here?

WWE could surprise fans and have Finn win with assistance from Bullet Club alumni Gallows and Anderson and we see the official formation of the Balor Club. While not an original idea, it would at least make a little bit of sense given the history of the four wrestlers. In reality, once Bray Wyatt was pulled off the show, Finn Balor should also have been pulled and a replacement match of Elias vs. Matt Hardy should have been added to the show.

In an even bigger head-scratcher, RAW General Manager Kurt Angle is in a match where he has no major issue, other than general annoyance, with anyone on the opposing team. General Managers wrestling isn’t anything new. Especially since most General Managers have been former wrestlers. However, their matches usually are the culmination of weeks of building verbal and physical altercations. Two weeks prior to TLC at Hell In A Cell, Smackdown Commissioner Shane McMahon fought Kevin Owens after Owens had insulted Shane and physically assaulted Shane’s dad, WWE Owner Vince McMahon.

Kurt Angle, on the other hand, has not had any major altercation with The Miz, the Bar (Sheamus and Cessaro), Braun Strowman or “The Original Demon” Kane. So why is Angle in the match? Also, since this is Angle’s first WWE match in a decade wouldn’t they want to have more than 48 hours to promote his return? I’m predicting something happens to Angle during the show and he is replaced by his “son” Jason Jordan in the match. Promote Angle to garner interest, insert Jordan to save Angle’s return for a bigger occasion.

Surprisingly, Kurt Angle’s return isn’t the most illogical aspect of this match.  The main event of the TLC show is a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match that unlike every other TLC match has nothing hanging above the ring the competitors have to use a ladder to retrieve. It’s also a 5 on 3 match where all wrestlers fight at the same time negating any needs for tags. A 5 on 3 non-tagging, non-ladder tag team ladder match.  It’s almost like having a falls count anywhere cage match…oh, wait.

Back to the involvement of Kurt Angle. Since Angle is the Raw GM, how does he show up Monday night on RAW and claim to be an impartial authority figure since he wasn’t forced into a much? If I were The Miz, I would have the WWE board of directors on speed dial and get an answer to this question.

While I may not think the storytelling of these two matches makes sense, the matches along with the rest of the show do look good on paper. I will be watching and will be curious to see where WWE goes next.

Don’t forget, a new episode of My 1-2-3 Cents the podcast drops every Monday.  And new episodes of Positive Cyncism drop usually on Tuesdays when I can find someone to talk to me for an hour.

Save it for Survivor Series

@kevinhunsperger & @my123cents on Twitter

I try not to judge WWE too harshly on the progression of storylines. As we've discussed before, pro wrestling is a marathon and not a sprint. With six hours of original content 52 weeks a year on top of two monthly special events, the flow must keep going. I understand all that. But in my 1-2-3 cents the main event set for TLC would be better served for next month's Survivor Series.

As it stands now; the Miz, Braun Strowman, Cesaro, Sheamus and Kane will face the three members of the Shield; Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. It's going to be contested in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match. I'm all for the Shield reunion. The original main event of those three against the Miz and the Bar was enough for me. When Braun was added, my thoughts turned to saving this for Survivor Series. Now that Kane is in the fold, I'd definitely wait.

Kane returns
Courtesy: WWE
I've always loved the traditional four on four or five on five elimination matches at Survivor Series. In my Tuesday morning booker role, I would have saved Kane to reemerge at TLC and then join The Shield against the four others. Or, Kane appears Monday night and helps Roman win and eliminates Braun from the TLC main event. Then Kane and Braun battle on the undercard and build up to the tag match at Survivor Series.

Again, I don't know where we're headed, so my thoughts are probably not going to make sense in the long-term plan. But that's what wrestling fans do. We book things the way we want them to be. However, I get stacking the deck against the Shield makes them stronger than ever. I just wish they would have saved this angle for November.

I can't see Cena retiring

Torch passed???
Courtesy: WWE
By Kevin Hunsperger
@kevinhunsperger & @my123cents on Twitter

Not surprising, Brock Lesnar retained the Universal Championship and Roman Reigns beat John Cena. Now there is buzz that Cena is retiring. I can't see Cena retiring (pardon the pun) anytime soon. But he will continue to separate himself more as an in-ring performer. I'm cool with that.

As Cena mentioned during Raw Talk, he's 40 years old. He's been going at an elite level for 15 years. The guy deserves a break. When you get older, those breaks become more important, not just for the body but the mind. While watching the match between Cena and Reigns (I knew the result because I watched Monday morning), my respect for Cena grew even more than before.

Make-a-Wish
Courtesy: WWE
Too many times fans, sometimes myself included, have referred to the 16 time WWE Champion as Super Cena. It's not meant to be endearing, but a jab at Cena's way of always coming back for the win. However, it's Cena's out of ring persona that is truly worthy of the "super" adjective. I've talked about it before, but his work with Make A Wish, Susan G. Komen and other charitable groups simply cannot be matched. Cena has been the face of the company for more than a decade, and it's a title he's earned and performs well.

For the time being, Roman has the torch in his hands. But Cena isn't ready to let go just yet. I'm sure on Raw tonight we'll get an "I retired the Undertaker and John Cena" promo. It goes well with the story WWE is telling for Roman. I don't mind it. I don't dislike either man involved in this. Fans sometimes forget this is a marathon and not a sprint.

Speaking of which, I'm still on the side that Reigns will reign again as Universal Champion at WrestleMania. The story has been building between him and Lesnar for years. They've both beaten the Undertaker at WrestleMania. They've both beaten John Cena in convincing fashion. Even though I'd rather see Samoa Joe, Braun Strowman or the ultimate longshot, my main man Neville, get a crack as Universal Champion, I'm going to put faith in the storytellers and writers within WWE.
