TLC: Totally (Il)logical Changes

By
Chad Smart
@chadsmart & @my123cents on Twitter

It’s been quite some time since I last submitted a blog here on the mighty My 1-2-3 Cents website. I think the last time I wrote something fans still liked Roman Reigns. Let's see if I can remember how to be snarky and cynical. Speaking of cynical, be sure to listen to my podcast Positive Cynicism. Available on the Jittery Monkey Podcasting Network and on iTunes. Back to the blog.

On  Friday (10/20/2017) WWE announced that due to health reasons Bray Wyatt and Roman Reigns were pulled from the TLC network special. WWE also announced AJ Styles would replace Bray in a match against “The Demon” Finn Balor while Kurt Angle would wrestle his first match in WWE in over ten years filling in for Roman Reigns in the Shield vs. The StrauKane Bar-Mizvah 5-3 TLC match. On paper these changes garner excitement. In reality, they show WWE’s lack of coherent storytelling and lazy booking of creating specific highlight clips rather than organic moments.

I guess I should explain why I’m being critical of these changes. WWE is not an independent promotion doing a spot show every month focusing more on putting on good matches than ongoing storylines. WWE has weekly episodic television. Whatever happens Sunday should play off of what has happened over the previous weeks and lead into what’s going to happen the next night on Monday Night Raw. So yes, putting AJ Styles and Kurt Angle into matches makes sense if Sunday’s show was a house show and WWE wanted to give fans suitable replacements to get their money’s worth. As a televised event, the changes make little to no sense.

Die-hard wrestling fans know AJ Styles and Prince Devitt (Finn Balor’s pre-WWE name) were members of the super popular (and IMO, super douchey) New Japan faction The Bullet Club. Seeing two former Club members wrestle each other has been a dream match since AJ Styles debuted in WWE at Royal Rumble 2016. For non-New Japan fans or fans who don’t know the history of AJ and Finn, what interest is there in seeing the two wrestle? I’m not taking anything from the talent of the two wrestlers as this match could have the potential to be the match of the night. Looking at the matchup from a logical (and longtime readers know Kevin and I often complain about the lack of logic in wrestling) standpoint, I fail to see a storyline reason for this match.

TLC is a RAW brand show. AJ Styles is a Smackdown superstar. So far in the 18-month redo of the brand split, WWE has done a pretty decent job of keeping the brands separate on non-co-branded shows. Why has Smackdown General Manager Daniel Bryan allowed to let AJ Styles wrestle for RAW? What storyline reason does AJ have to wrestle Finn? WWE is still promoting Finn’s alter ego, “The Demon” for this match. Why would “The Demon” come out to wrestle AJ? What will happen after Sunday when AJ goes back to Smackdown? What is the longterm, or since the next show is the co-branded Survivor Series, what is the short-term booking fallout here?

WWE could surprise fans and have Finn win with assistance from Bullet Club alumni Gallows and Anderson and we see the official formation of the Balor Club. While not an original idea, it would at least make a little bit of sense given the history of the four wrestlers. In reality, once Bray Wyatt was pulled off the show, Finn Balor should also have been pulled and a replacement match of Elias vs. Matt Hardy should have been added to the show.

In an even bigger head-scratcher, RAW General Manager Kurt Angle is in a match where he has no major issue, other than general annoyance, with anyone on the opposing team. General Managers wrestling isn’t anything new. Especially since most General Managers have been former wrestlers. However, their matches usually are the culmination of weeks of building verbal and physical altercations. Two weeks prior to TLC at Hell In A Cell, Smackdown Commissioner Shane McMahon fought Kevin Owens after Owens had insulted Shane and physically assaulted Shane’s dad, WWE Owner Vince McMahon.

Kurt Angle, on the other hand, has not had any major altercation with The Miz, the Bar (Sheamus and Cessaro), Braun Strowman or “The Original Demon” Kane. So why is Angle in the match? Also, since this is Angle’s first WWE match in a decade wouldn’t they want to have more than 48 hours to promote his return? I’m predicting something happens to Angle during the show and he is replaced by his “son” Jason Jordan in the match. Promote Angle to garner interest, insert Jordan to save Angle’s return for a bigger occasion.

Surprisingly, Kurt Angle’s return isn’t the most illogical aspect of this match.  The main event of the TLC show is a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match that unlike every other TLC match has nothing hanging above the ring the competitors have to use a ladder to retrieve. It’s also a 5 on 3 match where all wrestlers fight at the same time negating any needs for tags. A 5 on 3 non-tagging, non-ladder tag team ladder match.  It’s almost like having a falls count anywhere cage match…oh, wait.

Back to the involvement of Kurt Angle. Since Angle is the Raw GM, how does he show up Monday night on RAW and claim to be an impartial authority figure since he wasn’t forced into a much? If I were The Miz, I would have the WWE board of directors on speed dial and get an answer to this question.

While I may not think the storytelling of these two matches makes sense, the matches along with the rest of the show do look good on paper. I will be watching and will be curious to see where WWE goes next.

Don’t forget, a new episode of My 1-2-3 Cents the podcast drops every Monday.  And new episodes of Positive Cyncism drop usually on Tuesdays when I can find someone to talk to me for an hour.

Save it for Survivor Series

@kevinhunsperger & @my123cents on Twitter

I try not to judge WWE too harshly on the progression of storylines. As we've discussed before, pro wrestling is a marathon and not a sprint. With six hours of original content 52 weeks a year on top of two monthly special events, the flow must keep going. I understand all that. But in my 1-2-3 cents the main event set for TLC would be better served for next month's Survivor Series.

As it stands now; the Miz, Braun Strowman, Cesaro, Sheamus and Kane will face the three members of the Shield; Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. It's going to be contested in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match. I'm all for the Shield reunion. The original main event of those three against the Miz and the Bar was enough for me. When Braun was added, my thoughts turned to saving this for Survivor Series. Now that Kane is in the fold, I'd definitely wait.

Kane returns

I've always loved the traditional four on four or five on five elimination matches at Survivor Series. In my Tuesday morning booker role, I would have saved Kane to reemerge at TLC and then join The Shield against the four others. Or, Kane appears Monday night and helps Roman win and eliminates Braun from the TLC main event. Then Kane and Braun battle on the undercard and build up to the tag match at Survivor Series.

Again, I don't know where we're headed, so my thoughts are probably not going to make sense in the long-term plan. But that's what wrestling fans do. We book things the way we want them to be. However, I get stacking the deck against the Shield makes them stronger than ever. I just wish they would have saved this angle for November.

TLC 2016 Predictions

In all honesty, I'd forgotten tonight is the annual TLC pay per view. SmackDown Live Superstars will be battling it out on this event. I have not kept up with the blue brand (or Raw for that matter) like I should be. The last couple of weeks have been chaotic and I've not made the time to watch the DVR. I blame the Simpsons marathon on FXX for part of this. But anyway I digress. Here are my quick picks for the TLC.

AJ Styles will retain the WWE Championship in the Tables Ladders and Chairs match against Dean Ambrose. This will be a crazy match, I have no doubt. I just hope no one is seriously hurt.

Alexa Bliss will win the SDL Women's Championship from Becky Lynch in a tables match. This will be like the first time Sheamus beat John Cena for the gold. Simply going through a table protects Becky.

The Miz will retain the Intercontinental Championship in a ladder match against Dolph Ziggler. I see no point in putting it back on Dolph just weeks after having him lose it. But this is the one match I'm not 100% certain of.

Kalisto will beat Baron Corbin in a chair match. This will be the match I leave my chair for and go do something else.

Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton will win the SDL Tag Team Championships from Rhyno and Heath Slater. I like the pairing of Wyatt and Orton and having them win the gold would be an interesting dynamic to this partnership. As of this writing, that match is the only one without a gimmicky.

Carmella will beat Nikki Bella in a no DQ match. I usually never bet against John Cena or his female counterpart, but I am this time. Natalaya will help Carmella win, revealing she's the Survivor Series attacker.

Tripping the Other Heels

Triple H attacked

Just wanted to weigh in real quick on the ending of WWE TLC.  Roman Reigns destroyed Triple H after Sheamus and his fellow League of Nations buddies celebrated in the ring.  Of course I'm speculating and doing exactly what I hate from others, but it appears this is leading to a Triple H-Reigns match at either the Royal Rumble, Fast Lane or Wrestlemania.

I don't like putting the cart before the horse and I know everything is part of a bigger picture, but I have to share My 1-2-3 Cents on the situation as I see it right now.  To me, putting Triple H in the ring with who the company is selling as the biggest baby face shows there's something wrong in terms of developing new characters, especially heels.

Seth Rollins injury wasn't expected so I can cut them some slack on that.  When I look at the rest of the "bad" guys on the roster, no one stands out as being a credible top guy.  Even when Rollins was champ, I feel like he wasn't booked as the top guy.  I don't dislike Sheamus, but I'm still having trouble buying into him.  Rusev, King Barrett, Alberto Del Rio and Kevin Owens are all on the cusp of greatness.  Don't forget about Bray Wyatt (even though it seems creative has) either.  However I feel like for whatever reason WWE simply isn't pushing them.

We've seen a lot of guys go down with injuries this past year, including Rollins, Randy Orton, Daniel Bryan and Cesaro.  I'll continue to harp that the time is now (actually yesterday) to start building a more solid foundation for the talent that's there on a regular basis.  That's not to say Triple H can't and shouldn't do a couple matches a year, I'm just not sure I like where this is headed with Roman.  It seems too similar to 2014 and the triumph Bryan achieved at Wrestlemania XXX.

Time will tell.  Maybe I'm wrong.  But I still think more needs to be done to help the younger guys excel as Superstars and not just hold that label because it's the company's buzz word.

SummerSlam A to Z: Tables, Ladders and Chairs

TLC SummerSlam 2000

Ladder matches had become a regular occurrence in the WWF by the year 2000.  When SummerSlam rolled around that year, Commissioner Mick Foley decided to add a twist to the concept.  He declared the first (technically speaking) Tables, Ladders and Chairs match.  Edge and Christian, who were the tag team champions, had been using chairs as weapons against the Dudleys (tables) and the Hardys (ladders).

The match at SummerSlam was even more brutal than the triple threat triangle ladder match the three teams had months earlier at Wrestlemania 2000.  I went back and watched the match for this blog and winced several times.  Those chair shots hurt just watching.  Bubba Ray going through the four tables as he tried climbing the ladder was brutal.  Edge getting folded in the ladder and Christian tossed on top of it made me yell in agony.

Lita's attempt to help the Hardy Boyz backfired as Matt ended up getting knocked into a several tables.  The over-the-ring camera captures an amazing shot of the impact.  Edge spears Lita after that and the champs ended up using a ladder like a stick and treat D-Von and Jeff Hardy like a couple of pinatas and knock them to the ground before climbing the ladder for the win.

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler do an excellent job telling the story beyond the violence.  Each man has classic lines during the battle, but I think JR's "I've never seen carnage like this!" hit the nail on the head.  If you have Channel 999, check it out.  Otherwise you can find it for free online.

Christmas Wish List: CM Punk

CM Punk undergoes surgery

@kevinhunsperger & @my123cents on Twitter

This is an easy one.  Most of you already know by now, WWE Champion CM Punk underwent knee surgery early this week, forcing him out of his upcoming title defense against Ryback at TLC.  It sounds like things went well with the surgery and Punk is expected to make a full recovery.  No word on how long that might take though.

So my wish for Punk this season is for a full and speedy recovery.  After surpassing John Cena as the longest title reign in the modern era of WWE programming I would hate to see him lose the title due to an injury.  I'm also actually looking forward to him defending the gold against The Rock at the Royal Rumble.  I hope he gets some much needed rest and recovers well and is able to go full steam ahead in the new year, including a defense at Wrestlemania.

No TLC for TLC

From WWE
I've mentioned it before, I'm not a huge fan of gimmick pay per views and gimmick title matches.  Although some from history have provided some great matches, including the Ladder match between Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 10 and the original TLC match with Edge & Christian against the Dudleys and the Hardys.

But those are the exceptions.  I think overall they're an easy way to take the title off the champion without them having to actually put someone over.  John Cena falling through a table last year and losing the title to Sheamus did nothing to make Sheamus look good or a legitimate champion.

That may also have to do with the booking of him as champion.  If you don't win the title or at least defend it by PINNING some solid opponents, you're going to look weak.  I worry about that with the Miz now.

So on to my predictions for Sunday's big event.

The Miz vs. Randy Orton (Tables Match):  The Miz just won the title.  My hope is he stays the champion, and for a while.  This match isn't one that Randy Orton can be pinned in and made to look "weak".  So far, the Miz has beat a 62 year old Hall of Famer (Jerry Lawler) in a ladder match and a pinfall over Rey Mysterio, thanks to outside interference.  I hope that if the Miz does retain, they actually let him get an actual pinfall win or two over guys like Cena and Orton in future title defenses, but I'm not holding my breath.

My pick: The Miz

Kane vs. Edge vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Alberto Del Rio (Tables, Ladders, Chairs Match): Up until Friday, this was just supposed to be a one on one contest with Edge and Kane.  I'm not sure why they added Mysterio and Del Rio at the last minute.  Lazy booking?  Or was this the plan all along?  Did someone figure out that Rey and Del Rio weren't in a match earlier this week and throw them into the fold knowing that Kane might have trouble doing a TLC on his own with Edge?  I expect lots of interesting spots through this one, and really am not sure who to pick to win now that the other two have been thrown into the mix.  My gut tells me to go with Kane.  My hope is that it's Kane.  End the year with a dominant champion on Smackdown!  My only concern with a Kane win is that we get the fourth version of Kane and the Undertaker at Wrestlemania 27.

My Pick: Kane

John Cena vs. Wade Barrett (Chairs Match): So Cena has destroyed everyone in the Nexus, except for Wade.  Can he go 6 for 6 tomorrow night?  I think if Cena wins it makes Nexus look weaker than it already does.  But Cena lost that big one to Barrett at Hell in a Cell, so I'm not sure where they're going with this.  I can see Barrett winning with help from fellow Nexus members, perhaps even the returning Skip Sheffield. If Barrett wins, it wouldn't make Cena look weak, but a Cena win could make or break the first NXT winner's future.

My Pick: Wade Barrett

Swagger wins at MITB, can he win another ladder match?
Dolph Ziggler vs. Kofi Kingston vs. Jack Swagger (Ladder Match): This one is for the Intercontinental title.  I could see any one of these guys winning and not being disappointed.  And I feel like Kofi could actually be bumped into the main event picture and not held back on the mid card.  That being said, I can see him winning the title again and launching into an actual push to the upper card.  He had some great spots from Money in the Bank at Wrestlemania and I expect the same tomorrow night.  Though Swagger did win MITB at Mania, perhaps he'll be the ladder match master.

My Pick: Kofi Kingston

John Morrison vs. Sheamus (Ladder Match): This one is for the #1 contender to the WWE.  Traditionally the WWE has a throw away title match at the Royal Rumble, so I could see Morrison winning this match and going on to face the Miz in January.  There's a history there too, so it could be booked right.  Sheamus losing here wouldn't take much away from him either, as he is the King of the Ring now, and it's just a matter of time before Triple H returns and resumes that feud.  I'd prefer that one be contested WITHOUT the title.  Nothing against HHH, but I'd rather see some guys who aren't usually in the title picture getting pushed to the top.  Regardless of the outcome, I suspect Morrison will impress.  I just hope he doesn't get himself hurt in there.

My Pick: John Morrison

LayCool vs. Natalya and Beth Phoenix (Tables Match):   Not sure that I like a tables match involving the Divas.  That's not sexist or at least it's not supposed to sound that way.  I just don't think this is going to go well.  Not because of Natalya or Beth, I think they'd be better opponents for each other actually.  And I think that's where we're headed with this program.  Natalya has basically taken care of LayCool.  I believe a Phoenix heel turn is coming.  Maybe even tonight.  Perhaps she helps put Natalya through the table and declares the Glamazon wants the gold and not friendship.

My Pick: LayCool with the assist from Beth Phoenix.

By my count, that's only 6 matches.  Sounds like a pretty short night.  I'm wondering if they'll add any more matches "exclusively" on WWE.com.  I am disappointed that Daniel Bryan isn't on the card and we're not getting a tag team title match of any kind.  No matter what happens Sunday night it will put us one step closer to that Road to Wrestlemania.  Hopefully creative doesn't run us off course with the decisions they make.
