One of the big surprise appears at NXT Takeover: The End of the Beginning was the appearance of WWE Hall of Famer "Precious" Paul Ellering. He of course rose to fame as the manager of the Road Warriors during their runs in the AWA, NWA and WWF. One can only assume Ellering is back to manage the two men who attacked American Alpha after the tag 
team title match.

For long time I've wanted more managerial presence in wrestling. Zeb Colter has been released, Ric Flair isn't with Charolette anymore and Paul Heyman only appears occasionally. So bringing in someone the caliber of Ellering is perfect. But WWE shouldn't stop with the Hall of Famer. Let this be the start of a manager revolution.

Look back at WrestleMania IV. There were seven different managers on that show (not counting Virgil and Peggy Sue).  I'm not suggesting we need that many, but three or four along with the development of a couple of stables would be great. During our recent Facebook Live chat and previous conversations, Chad and I agreed Roman Reigns could benefit greatly from having someone else doing the talking for him.

WWE doesn't have to bring back former managers to accomplish this, although I'd love to see Jim Cornette back too. The company needs to start developing a new generation of managers and allow them to learn from Heyman and Ellering now.

The ball was dropped years ago with Armando Estrada. It's time to pick it up and score big. We're off to a great start. I'd love to be in that class. Remember I once managed Velvet Sky at TNA house show. It's always been a dream of mine to be a wrestling manager.

I didn't plan on telling everyone this through a blog, but it makes the most sense (or My 1-2-3 Cents), as I can reach everyone who has supported through the years with one simple post.  If you're reading this and know me, you know I LOVE pro wrestling.  I have always wanted to work (and get paid) in the wrestling business.  Several months ago, that opportunity presented itself.

TNA (Total Non-Stop Action) Wrestling posted a job opening in the fall for a writer/producer.  I had no idea if I qualified, but I figured with my years in TV and my love for wrestling, I should at least apply.  It was appealing to me too, because TNA (aka Impact Wrestling) is based in Nashville, so I wouldn't be far from my original home of St. Louis (where my parents and inlaws still live)

I once managed Velvet Sky

In January, the company's human resource manager called me.  This was more than two months after applying.  I was shocked when she invited me to Nashville for an interview.  So I went and I thought things went pretty well.  They did mention my blog and some of the anti-TNA posts Chad and I have made through the years.  It was a bit awkward, but I figured if they called me for the interview, they were at least interested in me.

Then another two months passed and I heard NOTHING from them.  Then on Monday, my phone rang as I was leaving work.  It was Dixie Carter (owner of TNA) herself, offering me the job.  So, I have accepted the position and will start working with TNA Impact Wrestling in June.  I still can not believe this is happening.  It went from nothing to something pretty fast.  We're still working on the details of whether we'll stay here and I'll just travel with the company (it's a road job) and come home during down time.

If you're in southern Illinois and reading this, thanks for your support through the years.  This appears to be the end of the road... except for the fact that this is an April Fool's joke.  (Did I get anyone?)

My Wrestling Year in Review

This is more of a personal year in review.  I'm going to talk about some of the highlights of 2011 for me in terms of wrestling, and quite honestly there are so many.  I'd have to say this was the best year for me terms of wrestling.  It was the first full year that this blog has been up and running and as of this entry, we're at more than 104,000 page views since September 2010.  The My 1-2-3 Cents YouTube channel is also picking up steam, something that I'm proud of and vow to work harder on in 2012.

The most popular aspect of the YouTube channel is all the One on One Wrestling interviews I have posted.  In 2011 alone, I've interviewed Mickie James, D'Lo Brown, Lex Luger, Nikita Koloff, and Hacksaw Jim Duggan.  All of them were awesome to talk with.  There's no way to pick just one specific highlight from doing these interviews, so collectively I would say having the opportunity to sit down with all of them throughout the year has been an amazing experience.  I will say that my interviews with Lex and Nikita (they were at a local church together) went more than 20 minutes.  Much longer than I had anticipated because I knew they were both busy, but I thank all these legends who took the time to talk with me.

Another highlight of 2011 was getting the chance to serve as a "manager" to Impact Wrestling Knockout Velvet Sky.  It was part of the summer Basebrawl event at our local ballpark.  I won a contest on ESPN Radio.  She wrestled Angelina Love that night, who had Winter in her corner.  I basically wondered around outside the ring and prevent Winter from interfering.  It's something I never imagined I'd get the chance to do, and while I didn't look like Bobby Heenan or Jimmy Hart out there it was a great time.

The My 1-2-3 Cents Posse

Attending my fifth Wrestlemania was a lot of fun this year too. Chad and I were joined in Atlanta by our fellow My 1-2-3 Center Travis.  Travis and I flew down together and ran into Mean Gene Okerlund at the airport.  He agreed to let us get a picture with him.  Very cool considering it was a busy airport and he probably had other places to be.  Of course the posse dressed the part of Wrestlemania as well.  We went as the Heenan family, I was the Brain.  Chad played the Red Rooster and Travis dressed as the Brooklyn Brawler.  One thing that sticks out to me about that day wasn't so much Mania, but earlier in the day we attended the WrestleReunion event a few blocks away and Terri Runnels spotted me in the crowd and asked to have a picture taken.  That was plain awesome.  Travis and Chad had moved ahead in the room, but when she got a glimpse of them, we posed for another shot.

The Ryder Revolution really took off this year too with Zack Ryder creating a YouTube channel in an effort to get over with the fans.  Clearly it worked, as he is now the reigning U.S. Champion.  As he was rising to the top, he asked viewers to submit videos to become the esteemed "Broski of the Week."  I'm proud to say that I'm Episode 22's BOTW.  Woo, woo, woo! You know it!  While there's no cash prize involved, it's one of those things that just makes you feel good.

While all those events were awesome this year, I'd have to say the biggest highlight was being asked to be the color commentator for All American Pro Wrestling.  I've talked about it a lot on this blog, but having the opportunity to be a part of a local independent wrestling show is something I've dreamed about for years.  Now I'm living that dream.  AAPW Collision is going strong and showcasing the talents of a lot of local wrestlers.

Something else I'll be doing in the new year, which will likely be a highlight for the 2012 blog is wrestling in my first match.  The Masterpiece Mike Masters has challenged me, and I've relunctalently accepted.  I'll be sharing more details about that in the coming days, but I can tell you if you live within a driving distance of Marion, Illinois, it'll worth the drive.  Besides the hard working stars of AAPW, internationally known wrestlers PAC, El Generico, and Colt Cabana will be coming to town.  It's Saturday, January 14.  Click here for ticket info!

Since the WWE started introducing us to the Divas division years ago, the ladies of the ring have been dressing up for various holidays.  We've seen them dressed as elves around Christmas, Pilgrims at Thanksgiving, and various sexy figures for Halloween.

Bound for Glory or Bound for Mediocrity?

I checked out the theater screening of Impact Wrestling’s Bound for Glory pay per view. I would easily go again to another screening of this type. Fifteen dollars really isn’t a bad value for a three and a half hour show. The video and audio were crystal clear and unlike going to a sport bar to watch a PPV, you could actually hear the commentary. Granted, in today’s wrestling, being able to hear the commentary isn’t necessarily a plus. Hopefully TNA will offer more shows in this manner.  I’d also like to see WWE start to offer theater screenings. So while the viewing experience was fine, how was the show itself?

I don’t get the reasoning behind putting the Tag Team Title match on the preshow, but whatever.  The match was fine for what it was. Nothing special and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a rematch either on Impact or at next month’s PPV.

In typical TNA fashion, the X-Division title match kicked off the show. I’m not sure how many times Austin Aries and Brian Kendrick have fought each other in the last two months, but I’m ready for a new X-Division challenger for A Double. I felt this match was decent but felt very staged. There were several sequences that seemed like guys were going through the motions.  Aries retained the title and as I said, it’s time to move someone else into the title hunt.

RVD vs Jerry Lynn (From Impactwrestling.com)

Speaking of going through the motions, watching Rob Van Dam fight Jerry Lynn was like watching a past their prime rock band that is still touring clinging on to the fans singing along to their one or two hits. There was a scary moment during the match where Lynn went to sunset flip RVD off the apron onto a ladder. When Lynn flipped over RVD, he inadvertently kicked the ladder out of the way and Van Dam seemed to crack the back of his head on the guardrail. My biggest complaint with this match though was the build up had Lynn feeling slighted because RVD was the bigger star even though they were both in the matches from ECW.  This complaint completely overlooked Lynn’s history of helping establishing the X-Division during TNA’s first couple of years. Then after the match was over, Lynn and RVD were hugging and high-fiving like the friends they are in reality. What happened to the big feud? 

Samoa Joe vs. Matt Morgan vs. Crimson was about as good as could be expected. Still don’t understand why Joe is a jobber to the stars, or why Crimson is undefeated.  This was a solid three-way up until the ending. Morgan went for the Carbon Footprint on Joe but wound up hung up in the ropes allowing Crimson to hit a weak looking spear on Joe for the win.

Mr. Anderson is probably the one wrestler who has fallen the furthest in my eyes. I used to think he was good and entertaining. Now I find him borderline unbearable. Bully Ray has stepped up his game and has gone from someone I was hoping would retire to someone I actually enjoy watching. Put the two of them together in a street fight and you have a match that while enjoyable felt like an ECW tribute match. At one point Anderson grabbed a sign from a fan at ringside, hit Bully Ray with it, then peeled away the poster board to reveal a Dead End road sign. Towards the end of the match, Anderson had Ray on a table on the floor. Anderson went to the top rope and tried for a swanton bomb but overshot Ray, only glancing him on his way down.  Perfectly fine match.

Victorious Velvet (from Impactwrestling.com)

Stevie Wonder saw the ending of the Knockouts title match before the bell rang. With Karen Jarrett refusing to count any pin falls by Mickie James or Velvet Sky, and telling Traci Brooks to stay away from ringside unless Karen was in trouble, it was only a matter of time until Karen got “injured’ and Traci would come into to make the three count.  That’s exactly what happened to help Velvet Sky capture the Knockout Title. I’m expecting either Karen stripping Velvet of the title on Impact or stacking the odds against Velvet in a return match against Winter.

Last year AJ Styles had an I Quit match against Tommy Dreamer. This year he gets one against Christopher Daniels. The theme of the night continued with another solid match whose ending would seem to lead to a rematch next month.

In a “only in wrestling” segment, Jeff Jarrett who had told Jeff Hardy on Impact to not show up in Philadelphia, waited two hours to call Hardy out to the ring instead of having him removed from the building when Hardy showed up. I am in the apparent minority who doesn’t want to see Jeff Hardy in a wrestling ring. Seeing how he has not made any public apology to the fans for his Victory Road performance, nor seen fit to try to clean up his act, I feel Hardy should straighten out his personal life before getting back to full time wrestling. But that’s just me. Also, it appeared as if Jeff Hardy was wearing a shirt that had his mug shot on it. Or at least it was a picture that was very similar to a mug shot. So if that’s the case, to me, it’s another example of how Hardy and TNA doesn’t see Hardy’s offense as a serious matter.

Hulkamania returns... (from Impactwrestling.com)

Going into the show, I was curious to see how bad Sting vs. Hulk Hogan would end. The match was far from good. It was basically Sting bumping for Hogan and then both being busted open because in today’s wrestling world bleeding equals great. Before the match it was revealed referee Jackson James was Eric Bischoff’s son and was in on a fix to make sure Hogan won. Sting got Hogan in the Scorpion Death Lock and Jackson called for the bell. Immortal came down and started beating up Sting. Then came something I don’t understand. Sting called out to Hogan for help, Hogan looked to the fans, fans cheered, and Hogan and Sting cleaned the ring. So 22 months of Hogan screwing TNA is forgotten in 10 seconds. Why do the fans cheer Hogan? I may write a more in depth blog on that in the future.

Bobby's rude awakening (from Impactwrestling.com)

I saw the main event as a turning point for TNA. Unfortunately TNA thinks Turning Point is next month and thus this month is stats quo month. The build up to the Kurt Angle/Robert Roode match was done near perfectly to set up Roode winning the title and TNA to start down a road of pushing fresh homegrown talent. I don’t know if it was because of a time constraint or what, but the match felt like it skipped the first act.  Instead of building to near falls, the match fell into a pattern of Angle Slam, Cross Face, Angle Slam, Spinebuster, Angle Slam, Fisherman Suplex, Angle Slam.  Then the finish was Angle pinning Roode after an Angle Slam. Roode’s arm was under the rope, and Angle was holding onto the second rope. The referee didn’t see either arm and made the three count. So Roode didn’t win the title but his loss would seem to dictate a rematch is necessary.  The problem is Roode’s momentum is gone. So what if he wins the title next month, TNA blew it by not capitalizing on build up to the biggest show of the year.

Overall Bound for Glory was a perfect example of the pros and cons of TNA. Solid action and lousy booking.  As I said in my last blog, instead of focusing on new shows, TNA needs to look at their current programming and fix the problems. We’ll see what happens at the next round of Impact tapings.

If you watched any of Tough Enough for this past spring, you heard the trainers telling the men and women wanting to follow in their famous footsteps that they had to do something to get themselves over.  It was almost a weekly sermon (or so it seemed).

Zack Ryder has probably used that mantra to his advantage more than anyone else on the active roster.  His Z True Long Island Story is a YouTube sensation to say the least.  Daniel Bryan has jumped on board too, and is now on YouTube as well as Zack's former partner Curt Hawkins.

So as a wrestling fan and a blogger who is trying to be taken seriously (seriously being a relative term here), I'm dedicating this post to a little cross promotion.  I'm attaching some of my favorite videos from the My 1-2-3 Cents YouTube Channel (many of them have hardly been watched) in an effort to get myself over.  This site gets roughly 200 hits a day, so I thought it can't hurt.

On the YouTube channel, you'll find several different wrestling characters I've created.  I did that because my first round of videos weren't getting watched at all.  A friend (who is not a wrestling fan) suggested doing something a little wacky to get noticed.  It's kind of worked, but I still don't have a lot of views. So please watch and tell me what you like and what you don't like.  I'm looking for honest feedback.  On a positive note, I was Broski of the Week in Episode 22.  WWWYKI!

I also want to thank you for reading the blog or watching the YouTube channel.  I also encourage you to subscribe to both and tell your friends about us.  Wrestling has been a hobby for nearly 30 years,  and outside of my family and friends (some anyway) it's the greatest joy in my life.  Pathetic, maybe.  But it's how I feel.

Positive Review of Impact Wrestling

No, it’s not April Fool’s Day and I’m not joking. The 6/16/11 episode of Impact Wrestling was actually entertaining and didn’t have me pulling my hair out in frustration. Was it perfect? No, but then every show has room for improvement. Impact was a huge step up from the last time I watched and has me interested in next week’s shows. As a disclaimer though, I caught an online repeat at 11pm that didn’t include commercials. Maybe the lateness of watching the show, or the fact I didn’t have to sit through 4 minute annoying commercial blocks that can cause me to lose interest in any show skewered my perception. Whatever the case, I figured since I’ve spent months criticizing TNA, it’s only fair I also give them praise when I like the show. Onto my review of the show.

I started watching towards the end of the Mr. Anderson/Gunner promo. Since I didn’t have to sit through an extended promo (which has become stale http://my123cents.blogspot.com/2011/06/wrestling-format-best-if-used-before.html) my annoyance level was kept to a minimum.  The Mr. Anderson character doesn’t do anything for me. I think he’s quickly entered John Cena territory as far as being repetitive and juvenile on the mic. Mr. Anderson being champion doesn’t make me interested in any upcoming title matches either. I haven’t seen enough of Gunner to really have an opinion. From reading the results over the last few weeks it seems someone in TNA is really high on Gunner and is trying to make him a star. I have no problems with TNA using homegrown talent and making them the focus. That’s something I’ve been begging them to do for years. Though Gunner doesn’t really look like a star. He looks like generic indy wrestler template #3. But I’m willing to give TNA the benefit of a doubt and see if they can continue to focus on Gunner or if they get distracted and forget about him after a month.

The Bound For Glory Series is an interesting concept. Since every match counts (TV and house shows) I’m curious to see if the numbers are correct or if there will be some creative accounting done to ensure a specific wrestler wins the tournament. Most of the top tier guys don’t work house shows while the wrestlers who do house shows don’t wrestle at every show. Will we see some guys kept off of TV for a few weeks to keep their numbers low?  Or am I looking for a fire when there isn’t any smoke?  The bigger question will be if TNA can actually stay focused on this until Bound For Glory. How long did the rankings system last before it magically disappeared?

While I’m not really a fan of ODB or Miss Jackie, I do like the idea of them coming in and attacking Velvet Sky. Curious to see if they go after other “beautiful” knockouts as well or if they only feud with Velvet before disappearing again. The beat down was one of the most intense I’ve seen from women’s wrestling. It’s stuff like that that will separate TNA from WWE.

I’m a sucker for good comedy, which is why I enjoyed the Eric Young challenging, and beating Jason Hervey segment. It came out of nowhere and was kept short. Still don’t understand why EY goes from wacky character to serious wrestler on a weekly basis, but this week was entertaining. Don’t understand why Matt Morgan wouldn’t want to be TV champion though.

Destination X pay per view could be good if they let the wrestlers go all out and don’t overbook the show. Hopefully this will lead to the X division being more than an afterthought. It was interesting to see Kid Kash back in TNA given his history with the company. Would have liked to seen some interaction between Jimmy Rave and Christy Hemme for continuity’s sake. I’m not a huge Austin Aries fan but I can’t deny he has presence and has a solid fan base. The 3-way match with these guys was a great reminder of how good the X-Division can be when given the chance. Curious to see next’s week match with three new stars to TNA.

Samoa Joe and RVD put on a good match to kick off the Bound for Glory series. It’s a shame these two have been put on the back burner for no apparent reason.

The main event was all right. As I said earlier, Anderson doesn’t interest me and Gunner is still too new for me to get excited about. With Kurt Angle being the number one contender will Gunner hang around long enough to get a title shot he deserves after beating both Anderson and Sting while they were champ?

The street fight between Jeff Jarrett and Kurt Angle was something different. I don’t think there’s been a televised street fight since Eddie Guerrerro had one in 2002 or 2003. (I don’t remember his opponent and don’t have time to look it up. Sorry) I liked how they had the rest of the guys out there watching. Though I don’t know why they didn’t have Taz and Tenay doing commentary. Wait, did I just say I wanted to hear TNA commentary. Something must be wrong with me. Actually the commentary on the show wasn’t intolerable. Maybe TNA is starting to come around.

Overall, I was entertained by more than I was annoyed by while watching Impact. Hope this is a new direction TNATNA.

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a wrestling manager.  I knew that I would never be able to cut it as a wrestler.  I don't have the athleticism or physique to get in the ring and perform.

I've had a couple of opportunities in recent years to ring announce, ref, and even do some color commentary.  On June 10, I got the ultimate opportunity.  I was in the corner of TNA Impact Wrestling Knockout Velvet Sky.  Although it was a brief experience, it's one I'll never forget.

Let me start from the beginning.  A couple of months ago, TNA announced plans to hold a Basebrawl event at Rent One Park (home of the Southern Illinois Miners, in the Frontier baseball league)  As soon as the show was announced, I made contact with the folks at Rent One about getting a TNA star on the morning show I anchor.  In the past I've interviewed Billy Gunn live on the air, as well as Sid Vicious and Jerry Lawler on the phone.

D'Lo Brown in the house!

It wasn't until Wednesday that I found out who would be coming in.  It was D'Lo Brown, a former star in both TNA and the WWE.  Now he is an agent for TNA.  I've got to tell you, D'Lo was absolutely awesome.  We spoke briefly before the show and he was really cool.  I think sometimes wrestlers are leery about doing media interviews, but they are pleasantly surprised to learn the guy doing the interview is a die hard wrestling fan.

I know the product, and I think that helps make them comfortable.  Plus, I'm not going to ask silly questions or act like a mark.  At least I try not to!  D'Lo did great and told me to look him up at the stadium that night.   I had won a local radio contest to get the shot at being a manager.  D'Lo let me pick who I would manage, and I went with his suggestion of Velvet.

I made a video for the contest to get the chance to be a manager for the night.  My Facebook friends wanted me to head to the ring as Professor Wrestlestein.  But once I got to the show, I was asked not to dress up.  They didn't want me taking any attention away from Velvet, Angelina Love or Winter.  I was cool with that, but somewhat disappointed.  But it was their show, I was just there as a guest.

Our match was the second, and I waited in the "backstage" area on the field before the show started.  Cookie, Robbie E., and Eric Young kicked off the event.  I got to meet Dave (or Earl) Hebner as I waited for the ladies to show up.  D'Lo arrived with them on a golf cart and introduced me to Velvet.  He explained to her that I was a local news anchor and she started to tell me what I needed to do out there.  D'Lo interrupted and told Velvet I was a big time wrestling fan.  I think that put Velvet a bit more at ease too.  But honestly, my heart was pumping and I was so nervous.  I just didn't want to look like a tool in front of a crowd that big.  It's different than looking like a tool on the news, because those people aren't there yelling at me in person.

Hello!

We ran through the inflatable dome together and I walked around the ring as Velvet did her provocative entrance.  The fans ate it up.  And I'm not bragging here, but there were some loud "Kevin Hunsperger" chants from the front row.  Of course it was a group of guys from the AAPW group here in southern Illinois.  Other viewers of our morning show were also calling my name.  That was a great feeling, despite the fact that I felt I looked very lame out there.

This was the write up from the PW Insider on the match: ‎"Velvet Sky w/ Kevin Hunsperger defeated Angelina Love w/ Winter. Kevin won the "Be a Manager" contest from ESPN Radio. He's an anchor for WSIL TV. The ringside fans seemed more interested in chanting for Kevin, as he's a well known personality, at least in the section I was at. I believe the ending saw a failed interference attempt form Winter, which led to Velvet rolling Angelina up for the win."

Basically all I did was go after Winter when she attacked Velvet.  Of course there was no contact made, as I was the baby face and baby face guys don't hit women.  I also played the role of cheer leader, pounding on the mat and starting a "Let's Go Velvet!" chant when my gal was down.  After she picked up the win, we went back stage and did an interview with the local ESPN station.  Again, it was surreal experience, and something I have always dreamed of.

I went back to my seat with the rest of the My 1-2-3 Cents posse.  My friends crack me up as they were taunting and yelling at the guys in the ring.  They even had a "We Hate Kevin" chant.  Gotta love friends.  Chad and I had a chance to go back stage again and meet several stars and get pictures taken.  Other than managing Velvet, my other highlight was getting in the ring after the show with Kurt Angle and having a picture taken.

I know in the past we've taken shots at TNA and the management of the company.  I will say this about Friday's show.  They make the evening as fan friendly as possible.  Considering this was a house show, they had a lot of meet and greets and chances for fans to get up close and personal with the stars.  The only time I've seen anything like that with the WWE was at Wrestlemania Axxess, which costs a heck of a lot more than the TNA event.
