Way Back WhensDay: Chocodiles

Old school Chocodiles

Hostess recently brought back some of their more popular snack cakes, including Twinkies, Ding Dongs, and Donettes.  One thing that hasn't returned after the company's emergence from bankruptcy is the Chocodile.

As a kid, this was hands down my favorite of the Hostess treats.  Who could not love a Twinkie covered in chocolate?  It was the merging of two great cakes (the Twinkie & Ding Dong or Ho Ho) into one delicious treat.  There was a lot of school lunches that ended with a Chocodile.  I also remember coming home from middle school, eating a Chocodile and watching Fat Albert cartoons (that's kind of ironic now that I think about it.)  I even surprised my mom one year on her birthday by putting a candle in a Chocodile and singing Happy Birthday when she got home from work.

Mmmm....
While Chauncey Chocodile was a fun mascot, but he was no Twinkie the Kid.  I don't know exactly why the Chocodile for the most part has become extinct, but I'd love to see a comeback on store shelves. I've come across some websites that sell the treats, but I'm not sure how I feel about that.  They're also still available on the West coast, but if anyone from Hostess happens to stumble across this, please bring back the Chocodile everywhere.  There's a whole new generation of youth who have been deprived this confectionery creation.

In the meantime, I'll enjoy the occasion Twinkie (although I do miss the chocolate ones too, remember those?), cupcake, or Ding Dong.  Keep in mind, moderation is the key.  Happy snacking.

  1. From what I read, they were only available out west because it was the only way to guarantee freshness. I contemplated moving.

  2. An image attribution to Greg Koenig of flickr is missing from your post--not that he released his Chocodile box image via Creative Commons anyway.
