Stride Pro Wrestling presents Fright Night

Created by Sam Hunter

WWE has Hell in a Cell. WCW had Halloween Havoc. Stride Pro Wrestling has Fright Night. The October show is always a fun one to get into the Halloween spirit.  This year's event will be no exception as I find myself for the first time ever being an in-ring performer.

On Saturday night (Oct. 12) the men and women of Stride Pro Wrestling hit the ring at the Stride Arena (1130 N. Division St., Carterville). I'm excited because I'll be involved in the Boo Bash Battle Royal. This is great because I've never been involved in a battle royal before AND the winner will be a part of the main event later in the night. It'll be a fatal four-way for the Stride Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Title. Red Daniels defends against Ax Allwardt, Ryzer and the winner of the Boo Bash.

There are several other matches already announced for the show. El Magnifico defends the Legacy Title against Bud Gallows. The No Limits Title will be on the line as Bo Sawyer takes on Dexter Roswell. Also, the Sin City Saints (Jay Spade and Tony Flood) battle B-Rad and Will Power.

I've been told some wrestlers will be in costume that night. So fans, I encourage you to get dressed up too. Bell time is 6:30 p.m. We'll see you there.

New number one contender to be named soon

By Kevin Hunsperger

Stride Pro Wrestling returns on Aug. 4 to John A. Logan College in Carterville. I've mentioned in a previous blog that all three championships are on the line. Tony Flood defends the Heavyweight title against Jay Spade, Wraith puts the Legacy Title up against Arron Brooks and Ax Allwardt and Heath Hatton will defend the tag titles against the Midwest Monster Hunters.

I'm excited to announce another match has been set for the evening. There will be a battle royal to establish a new number one contender for the heavyweight title. Spade and Flood have been going back and forth, trading the title a few times along the way since March. The battle royal Saturday night will put someone else new in the title picture.

Like most Stride battle royals, the competitors on the undercard will all be a part of it. I'd expect to see the likes of the above-mentioned wrestlers along with Chris Hargas, Cash Borden, Farmer Billy Hills, Roger Matheus and the DR Party as part of the action.

Again, bell time is 6:30 p.m. in the Auxilary Gym at John A. Logan College in Carterville. Keep up with what's happening in Stride Pro Wrestling right here.

Show me the Moolah or maybe not

By Kevin Hunsperger
@kevinhunsperger & @my123cents on Twitter

By now you've seen the news that WWE had announced the first ever Fabulous Moolah Memorial Battle Royal. It was designed to be a tribute to the longest reigning champion in women's wrestling, and a female version of the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal that was established in 2014. However, there was fan backlash and WrestleMania sponsor Mars (Snicker's) released this statement:

We were recently made aware of the World Wrestling Entertainment Inc’s (WWE) decision to honor a former wrestler during the upcoming WrestleMania 34 event. As a principle-based business that has long championed creating inclusive environments that encourage and empower everyone to reach their full potential, this is unacceptable. We are engaging with the WWE to express our disappointment.

The battle royal will still happen, but now will be called the WrestleMania Women's Battle Royal. I like the idea of honoring a legend in this way. Several of Moolah's trainees have accused the now-deceased Superstar of keeping their earnings and pimping them out to male wrestlers. But is this the right call to make. I'm simply going to play Devil's advocate for the rest of this discussion.

Yes, change the name

Because of everything going on in Hollywood and beyond, reacting to allegations of abuse is the right thing to do. Moolah has been dead for more than a decade and obviously can't defend herself against the allegations.

Frankly, I was surprised the company made the plan in the first place. When the women's tournament last year was named after Mae Young and not Moolah, I made the assumption it was due to the past allegations. This situation is not new.

No, leave Moolah alone

Remember innocent until proven guilty. Society typically takes the word of the accuser over the accused. That's not to say we shouldn't. But in my own personal experiences, I've seen reports of sexual abuse reported and the accuser later recant their statement. Lives are destroyed in these situations.

Pro wrestling is an interesting form of entertainment. In my 1-2-3 cents, many fans don't separate the character from the person playing that character. Case in point, Mary Lillian Ellison is the woman behind the Moolah character. She's the one who allegedly treated her trainees, not the woman we came to love to hate to love again on WWE programming.

I'll lump that in with the Ultimate Warrior too. I know he legally changed his name to Warrior and years ago made several homophobic and other statements that some people found offensive. Now he's in the WWE Hall of Fame and has an award named in his honor. But again, I view the statements made by the man different than what was done in the ring.

It's not unlike the Bill Cosby situation.  I know some networks have pulled the plug on the Cosby Show. Dr. Cliff Huxatable isn't accused of drugging women and taking advantage of them, Cosby is. Plus when pulling the show the other actors, writers and crew members are being punished.

No one discredits the Joker for Heath Ledger's overdose death. However, when Sherri Martel's name was brought up to have the Battle Royal named after her, some discredit Sherri because of her addiction issues. But to that, I say addiction is a disease and would we be critical of someone who had cancer due to years of smoking? Or liver problems because they're an alcoholic? I realize I'm on a slippery slope at this point and a whole different argument can be made for addiction and substance abuse issues. I'll save that discussion for another day...

Again, I get that wrestling is different from the rest of Hollywood. Changing the name is probably the best for everyone involved. I'll close with this. I applaud WWE giving the Women's Division more opportunities. However, instead of copying everything the men have done (Money in the Bank, Elimination Chamber and Royal Rumble) I'd like to see some other kind of new and innovative match that's exclusive for the women. Let the male Superstars play catchup in that regard. I have no ideas for this women's match, just something I'd like to see WWE Creative come up with soon.

Summer heats up a week from tonight at the Illinois Star Centre Mall. Stride Pro Wrestling returns Saturday night, July 8. This week I'll be running down all the matches in separate blogs. Today's focus is the Rumble match to determine the number one contender to the Stride Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Championship.

The Rumble is an over the top rope battle royal. The last man standing will face the winner of the championship match between Roger Matheus and "Farmer" Billy Hills. I'll have more on that matchup in Monday's blog and podcast.

Most of the Stride roster will be a part of this important matchup. Former champions Ax Allwardt and Heath Hatton are in. Red Daniels, Jay Spade, Chris Hargas and members of the DR Party are among the participants as well. It's too early to pick a favorite because as we've seen in past battle royals and Royal Rumble matches, anyone can pull off the big win. Adding the number one contendership to the mix will no doubt make this a more competitive contest.

We'll see you Saturday night (July 8) at the Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion, Illinois. Bell time is 6:30 p.m. Who's gonna survive the Rumble?

Remembering Bruiser Brody

Brody!

I'm old enough to have had the chance to watch Bruiser Brody wrestle. My fandom started in 1983, about five years before Brody's life came to a tragic end. But in those five years, I'm flooded with many great memories of one of the toughest wrestlers to walk the planet.

Husk! Husk! Husk!
Most of the work I recall from Brody happened in World Class Championship Wrestling and the AWA. He would come to Texas and team up with the Von Erichs in their battles with Skandor Akbar's Devastation Incorporated. Brody would go toe to toe with beasts like Kamala and eventually Abdullah the Butcher among others. It was funny because he was the bad guy in the AWA under the management of Sheik Adnan-al Kaissie.

A week after attending my first professional wrestling show (WWF in Dec. 1984), we took in our first NWA event. Ric Flair defended the championship against Brody. Until recently I had no idea the match was online. The two battled to a bloody no-contest and Flair walked out with the gold. This was before my appreciation for the "Nature Boy" was found so I was disappointed with the outcome.

Butcher vs. Brody
Besides Flair, I'd argue Abdullah the Butcher was Brody's biggest rival in the business. The two carved each other up with foreign objects, including the Butcher's famous fork, in promotions around the world. Both of their foreheads looked like road maps after their years against each other in the ring.

This Saturday night, May 20, SICW celebrates the life of Brody with a memorial battle royal. His widow, Barbara Goodish, will be on hand as well as Abdullah. The event is also the celebration of the 58th anniversary of Wrestling at the Chase, a show that was a staple in our home on Sunday mornings for many years.

Brody's life ended way too soon, but I'm grateful for the time he was here and having the chance to go back and watch his work. No doubt he influenced plenty of men in the ring, including John Nord, Mick Foley and Luke Harper. Even Daniel Bryan wore "Brody boots" at WrestleMania XXX. Hopefully sooner rather than later Brody will take his rightful spot in the WWE Hall of Fame.
