It's hard to believe it's been a year since the world lost one of the all-time greats to ever step into a wrestling ring. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper is one of the Superstars who defined my childhood as a wrestling fan. From smashing a coconut on Jimmy Snuka's head to kicking Cyndi Lauper in the ring to painting half his body black; Piper was the man. His death was the third of three big stars from the 80s and 90s, with Dusty Rhodes dying a month earlier and The Ultimate Warrior a year before that.

WWE has honored the latter two with statues created in their likenesses. There's also the Warrior Award as part of the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony. And last year there was the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. But so far, nothing for Hot Rod. Maybe with the new Hall of Fame opening next year, there will be a statue or some tribute to Piper then.

All out of bubble gum
While My 1-2-3 Cents is far from a global entity, I wanted to do something to honor the memory of one of our favorite wrestlers. So in December when Chad and I put together the year-end Centy Awards there will be a new category in Piper's memory. The All Out of Bubble Gum Award will go to someone who has displayed courage, bravery and determination outside of wrestling storylines. When I hear the famous line "I've come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubble gum." it brings to mind someone who is determined to fight the good fight, no matter the odds.

Never got to met Piper, but Chad did
Piper made the line famous in the movie They Live, but had used it before in a wrestling promo before ever making it to the WWF/E. The line has inspired many and is even the name of a soda flavor. The award we'll do is a small way for a couple of fans to honor and remember a man who changed the way they viewed wrestling.
